Whirlwind vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz has his hands in Chicago's experimental/free jazz scene as much as is possible for a musician of his instrument—particularly for a musician that has journeyed through rock and alt-country. Whether he's erupting with a string of scales or painting a cool, melodic scene evocative of a detective flick, his instrumental acumen is obvious.
Adasiewicz has worked with some of the city’s biggest jazz names, serving as a part of Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra, Nicole Mitchell's Quartet, Guillermo Gregorio's Trio, and Ken Vandermark's Index Orkest. Though long a sideman—he performs in 20 working bands—he is quickly establishing a reputation as bandleader with his work in Rolldown.
Rolldown, a five-piece group, is the 30-year-old's songwriting outlet, in which he pens songs at a piano in conventional song structure. From there, however, the tunes evolve with improvisational harmonies from him and the rest of the group, comprised of cornetist Josh Berman, woodwind player Aram Shelton, bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Frank Rosaly. The group's self-titled debut album was released in May 2008 on 482 Music. (Scott Morrow)
