Jason Blake

As one of Chicago’s premiere Chapman Stick® artists, Jason Blake generates excitement each time he performs. Whether playing in a band setting or solo, audiences are often introduced to this unique instrument. After many years of playing piano, Jason switched over to the bass (electric and upright) and immersed himself in many different styles of music. Residing in the Detroit area at the time, he performed with rock bands, jazz combos and classical ensembles, in order to further develop his own style and sound. Also around this time, he also discovered a passion for the Chapman Stick® and found his true musical voice. "This is the instrument that I was always searching for. It enables me to incorporate my early piano training with my love for the low end sound of the bass," explains Jason. Created by Emmett Chapman, the Stick® incorporates the range of both a guitar and a bass while employing a two-handed tapping technique. This method allows two rhythms to be played simultaneously with each hand playing a different part. Jason currently plays the Grand Stick® (twelve-string) and the Stick Bass® (eight-string). Since this time, Jason has migrated to Chicago where he created the Translation Music™ record label as a means of releasing his own music. 2002 saw the release of Jason's debut album and the inception of the Jason Blake Band. "The Absence Of Color", an album featuring Jason on the Stick Bass® incorporated many different styles of music from world beats, ambient textures to progressive rock song structures. In 2004, Jason assembled the progressive rock group Aziola Cry. "I set out to create music that was challenging to play, yet accessible to the listener," explains Jason. What emerged was "Ellipsis", an eight-song showcase of well crafted songs that interconnect with each other to tell a dark tale without words.
