Despite a good deal of musical talent and an extraordinary discography -- his recent release Eureka is his 12th solo record, and the hundredth he's played on -- O'Rourke is better known as a producer. Currently is one of the main members of alternative rock troupes Gastr del Sol and Brise Glace, The Red Krayola, and Yona-Kit. Has recorded albums for rock bands such as Sonic Youth, Superchunk, Edith Frost, Brainiac, US Maple, Ex-Chittle, and has also collaborated with countless jazz and classical musicians. Founded the Elvis Messiahs in 1987, adding other DePaul University musicians to the solo project. He's written a score for the Kronos Quartet, and recorded a large number of works in his own name, including Terminal Pharmacys (Tzadik) and Remove the Need (Extreme). As a musician, he is known for his unusual improvisational guitar and electronics playing. His recent Bad Timing (on Drag City Records) is named after Nicholas Roeg's 1980 art film Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession, about which O'Rourke has lectured at the University of Chicago. In contrast to many of his early records, this one is actually listenable.
See Seth Tisue's ultra-complete discography! Extreme Records also has an O'Rourke page, but it's quite passe.
