| One of Chicago's most prominent music figures, Shanahan opened the Metro in 1982. It has since evolved into one of the world's most reliable havens for good underground music (R.E.M. was the first band he ever booked for Metro) -- with bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Smoking Popes, Liz Phair, and the Jesus Lizard growing up there. He's also a part of the team that opened Wicker Park's influential Double Door, and is the manager for singer/songwriter Diane Izzo.
