John Herndon

Known best for his percussive role in renowned post-rock group Tortoise, John Herndon is a multi-instrumentalist whose influences cross through rock, jazz, hip hop, electronic, and avant-garde styles. As one of the founding members of Tortoise, he has helped build the group’s deep rhythmic foundation, playing drums, vibraphones, keyboards and sequencers to establish its unique sound. His zeal for unique electronic equipment helped make Standards, the band’s 2001 full-length album, one of its most fusion-heavy releases with elements of hip hop and dub.

Herndon’s electronic solo project, A Grape Dope, also stems from his interest in sequencers and looping equipment. One such interesting piece of equipment is the Tenori-on, a digital instrument that uses a beautiful LED matrix interface to recall samples and MIDI. One of Herndon’s solo recordings, “Tenori On the Controls,” references this futuristic “visible music” creation.

A resident of Chicago since 1985, Herndon frequently collaborates in improvisational jazz circles with Tortoise bandmate Jeff Parker. Herndon’s resume touts many other forays into the worlds of rock, jazz, and hip hop, including stints as a member or recording artist (often listed as Johnny Machine) with Isotope 217, 5ive Style, Exploding Star Orchestra, Precious Wax Droppings, Poster Children and The For Carnation.
