| 66 year-old Chicago native is probably gospel's most well-known organist. The Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir, which he founded in 1960 "rocks like a big band on up-tempo selections and harmonizes with such precision on slow numbers that it sounds more like a giant pipe organ than a roomful of voices." (according to Chicago Reader critic Lee Hildebrand). Their 1969 song "Hello Sunshine" was a cross-over R&B hit, and his 1954 Vee-Jay recording of Amazing Grace" remains the best-selling instrumental in African-American gospel history.
