| Late blues guitarist/singer (1937-1969) born Samuel Maghett in central Mississippi. Learned to play the guitar by stretching strings tied to nails driven into a wall. Before dying of a heart attack in 1969 (at the age of 32), he recorded a number of hits, which remain West Side classics, including "Sweet Home Chicago" (a 1967 cover of Robert Johnson) and "I Just Want a Little Bit" (1969), documenting his distinctive tremolo fingerpicked guitar style. A number of his best recordings can be found on Delmark Records, including the 13-track The Magic Sam Legacy and his 1968 debut West Side Soul.
