Muhal Richard Abrams

Pianist, composer, co-founder (and first president) of the influential Chicago-based AACM was born in Chicago on September 19, 1930. The self-taught musician has performed with Max Roach, Dexter Gordon, Art Farmer, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Clifford Jordan, Ari Brown, Sonny Stitt, George Lewis, James Moody, Anthony Braxton, Eddie Harris, Mwata Bowden & many others... Has taught jazz composition and improvisational classes at the Banff Center, Columbia University, Syracuse University, and the BMI Composers workshop. His Experimental Band (formed in 1961) included Eddie Harris, Donald Garrett, Victor Sproles, and Roscoe Mitchell -- a rehearsal group for some of the city's foremost improvisers, grew into the more comprehensive Association for the Advancement of Creative Music. In 1976, Abrams moved from Chicago to New York City.

His piano style ranges from traditional black music (ragtime, boogie-woogie, and stride) to bebop and free, abstract improvisation. If his musical output seems uneven, it's probably because the process of playing seems more important to him, sometimes, than the musical results. Among his notable compositions, are Novi for symphony orchestra and jazz quartet, and his String Quartet #2, which has been performed by the Kronos Quartet.

Some of his best albums include: Levels and Degrees of Light and Young At Heart/Wise in Time (both on Delmark Records), Sightsong, and Spihumonesty (both on Black Saint).
