Nerves

A lot of the interest in recent punk bands reflect the combined influence of earlier punk in New York (such as the Ramones or the New York Dolls) with British bands such as the Buzzcocks or the Undertones. This "punk revival" overlooks a lot of the most pioneering music that one might call punk, and Nerves are well aware of this fact.

Drawing more from lesser-known bands from the rest of the US, whether Portland (home of the Wipers and the Rats), Boston (La Peste and the 2x4s), or Cleveland (the Pagans); Nerves create a "punk" music which is garage-y, fast, loud, and very very simple. Less catchy than what most other folks would label punk, but still with very well crafted songs. Fun and a bit scary at the same time. And simple.

"The Nerves are the hot rock'n'roll foil to the cool intelligence of the rest of Thrill Jockey's current roster," says Chicago Reader critic Monica Kendrick, "and their careening energy really makes the most sense live, with singer Rob Datum leaning lustily into the mike stand, bassist Seth Skundrick spitting insults at no one in particular, and drummer Elliot Dicks whaling away on the snare with both feet in the air."

They recently released their second full-length, New Animal, on Thrill Jockey, which also released an album from drummer Elliot Dicks's former band Rome.
