Guitarist/vocalist Seth Cohen recovered from a hockey injury (he literally broke his neck), and the band returned to action. Due to Cohen's mishap, the group was unable to perform at its own CD-release party for People People Why Are We Fighting. Luckily, a dozen or so local groups were already scheduled to perform covers of the album's songs... But, after touring behind that CD, the group has broken up. Drummer Michael Lenzi now fronts X-Vessel, with Cohen accompanying him on guitar. Catchy foursome played a wide variety of music, from pop to punk, to country, to experimental. While they seemed derivative when they first showed up two years ago, they matured into their own. Says the Chicago Reader's Monica Kendrick, "it's shimmery, flexible pop that can turn on a dime when it sees a cliche coming."
The latest, People, People..., is probably the best indie-rock effort to come out of Chicago in the past few years. Full of quirky, but melodic and catchy pop treasures, this is not an album to miss. Members included drummer Michael Lenzi and guitarists Seth Cohen (also in Clifton Tigers, previously in Eliot) & Pat O'Connell (also in Hooker) and bassist John Przybowski (also ex-Eliot). All four sing.
Their recordings include Possom Trot Plan (Flydaddy), a 7-song EP Kim Chee is Cabbage, and a new full-length Wrecked By Lions. They contributed a track to the Doorika Theatre's standout compilation Dig This (Sweet Pea Records). Also check out their split single with Red Red Meat ("Milk for the Mechanics"/ "The Tongue of 2 AM") in which both bands jam, based on a distorted cowbell sound.
