Young twenty-something jazz guitarist was originally born in Cincinnati, OH where he performed around town in various rock, pop, blues and jazz guises until 1995 when he came to the Windy City. In Chicago he teamed up with pianist Fred Rakestraw (who often plays with Von Freeman) and bassist James Cammack (who plays with Ahmad Jamal), and well-known drummer/percussion man Vernon Allison. The result is the 1997 release on Up Town Records Next Stop Jazzonia. The record is an eclectic mix of original compositions that ranges from Latin to electronic jazz to bebop. It's very smooth; a real delightful listen from start to finish. The disc has been getting regular play on WBEZ and other local jazz radio stations and has garnered a great deal of positive word of mouth in the local jazz community. Von Freeman called it "beautiful" and was picked by Mark Ruffin of WBEZ as one of the top 20 of 1997. R.J. and his band can be seen regularly about town supporting the record. Expect a new live recording in the first half of '99. For more information, visit their website: http://geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Bayou/9513/
