Ron Prince

Before his breakthrough gigs at Theresa's Lounge under the eye of Sammy Lawhorn, this South Side singer/guitarist was leading his old coming-of-age blues crew The Brighter Side of Darkness and fighting his family over a move downstate to Decatur. Ron eventually acquiesced, feeding his blues heart with a few high school bands. But at age 20 he was back up lakeside, scrapping with Johnny Dollar and The Scandalous Band, Bobby Rush and Syl Johnson, and moonlighting with R&B outfit Mona Lisa.

Come the late '70s, Ron would meet fellow guitarist Donald Kinsey, who had just finished a two-album session with Bob Marley. The two flirted with a band of their own out in California, called The Chosen Ones, which put out just one album. But the relationship was key, as Ron spent the next 11 years as part of Donald's new family band back in Chicago, The Kinsey Report.

Through Ron mastered his throaty pipes with the Kinsey brothers, he soon reinvented himself as a frontman for his own band Hard Time, where he dips into some '70s Delta blues. Paroled is the band's first and only album to date. (Gavin Paul)
