| Sabalon Glitz ("Alternative Rock" "Rock Artists" "Bands" "U. of Chicago") These Dr. Who-inspired University of Chicago space-rockers, a la Hawkwind find electronic toys everywhere, including a Moog synthesizer and a very funky theremin. The band is Carla Bruce (vocals, aforementioned theramin), Chris Holmes (guitars, farfisa, micromoog, dulcimer, stylophone, tape effects), Rob Kaeding (bass, feedback guitar) and percussionist Rick White. Holmes is also in Yum-Yum. Says Bill Meyer in a Chicago Reader Critic's Choice column (Jan. 1995), "Ufonic, Sabalon Glitz's fine debut CD, evokes an orbital ambience with its bubbling Moog synthesizers and droning guitars, but in concert their music takes on a harder edge; singer Carla Bruce's hoarse incantations have a bracing earthiness that helps the band keep one foot on the ground even when their improvisational jams achieve meltdown intensity." This reputation even landed them on the second stage at Lollapalooza. Their most recent full-length release, on Trixie Records, is called Ufonic (Trixie, 1994). Other recordings include a 1993 7" ("Orpheum," "Zoroaster"), a track ("Bellybutton Mind" on Spyral Tap '94, a compilation of Chicago and San Francisco bands.
