Sugar Blue

Grammy-winning Sugar Blue (for "Another Man Done Gone" off the 1982 live Blues Explosion recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival) has been called the Jimi Hendrix or the Charlie Parker of the harmonica, both appropriate names for the revolutionary blues harpist. He grew up listening to jazz - particularly Lester Young and Dexter Gordon. He's toured with the Rolling Stones and headlined the 1996 Chicago Blues Festival. As a person, James Whiting is sometimes moody, temperamental and brooding, but his music is always astonishing and maniacally energetic. The Stones' Mick Jagger calls him "a very strange and talented musician." He often plays Wednesday nights at Rosa's. His recent Alligator Records releases include In Your Eyes, Blue Blazes, and 2007's Code Blue.
