The Darlings recently had to change their name because a country group from Massachusetts has already used it. The tentative new name is The Dollings. Whatever the name, they've been playing together in many different variations since 1993 -- all including Tim Kelly (singer/guitarist) and J. Beitr (bassist) -- and since 1996 they have focused on their unique sound. Since then, they've added Jaison Chasko (who's played with Liz Phair) and a permanent drummer, Mike Zelenko (ex-Material Issue). It's Zelenko's first post-MI full-time gig.
Drawing on a vast number of influences, they mix early-era rock/pop with a noisy, heavy stomp. Think if Buddy Holly's band was the Clash instead of the Crickets. Melodic. Heavy. Obsessive. These all apply.
The Darlings play regularly in town, at venues such as Thurston's and Vinyl.
