The Dirty Blue

The current lineup of The Dirty Blue was formed in Chicago, Illinois in the summer of 2003 by John Kuhl (lead guitar, bass, vocals) and his brother Nathan Kuhl (drums, piano, bass, vocals). The brothers have been writing and performing music since their early teens in various projects appearing on local TV and radio shows. The group recruited Ukrainian singer/songwriter Dima (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), and had a brief stint playing shows with bassist Mahjula Bah-Kamara (formerly of garage rockers The Hiss, Atlanta, Georgia). In 2004, Melissa Kempfer (of Ellen Rosner's backup band) filled in until bassist J. Gedwill joined up. A truly unique combination of international talent proved to be a solid foundation for the band’s style, stage presence and songwriting approach. Steady local gigs followed, as did a series of recording sessions resulting in several self-released promo EPs. At this time, the band is in process of playing shows in support of their most recent concept studio effort entitled "Out Of The Blue Sessions". An eclectic compilation of catchy songs on the surface, this visionary material documents its thought-provoking depth while never forgetting the value of strong, crunching hooks. Fueled by Slavic mysticism, the lyrical content of The Dirty Blue specializes in gray studies of hopeless misery and cosmic irony of human relations. At its core, the music of The Dirty Blue delivers an uncompromising meld of British mod and prog-inspired traditional rock, especially on stage in raw live performances. And while the sound of The Dirty Blue frequently recalls the peak of the classic rock era, its ability to transcend and self-conscious appropriation of the past makes it thoroughly postmodern. In the very near future, the band will be heading back into the studio to record yet another EP, a collection of crowd favorites, entitled "The Dirty Blue Chronicles: Electricity" which, once again, will showcase The Dirty Blue's relentless dedication to the traditions and aesthetics of the golden age of rock.
