| Founded and led by bassist/composer Matthew Golombisky, the Tomorrow Music Orchestra is an ambitious ensemble that utilizes the services of up to 25 musicians and fuses jazz with classical music, experimental passages and riffs befitting marching bands. Golombisky is originally from New Orleans, where he conceived the group, before being forced to move to Chicago after the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Drummer Quin Kirchner (also of Chicago/Ann Arbor jazz-groove outfit NOMO) and vibraphonist Matthew McClimon moved north—also following the storm.
After settling in Chicago, Golombisky launched his idea in March of 2006 by gathering a few dozen talented jazz musicians and penning the group’s original compositions. Successive works have been composed by Golombisky and the group’s other members, and the lineup’s impressive instrumental arsenal includes flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, bass, alto and soprano saxophones, French horn, vibraphone, oboe, accordion, guitar and drums. To date, the group has released a pair of albums—Neon Jesus Garage and Live @ Ice Factory— on Ears & Eyes Records. (Scott Morrow)
