Jazz-spackled post-rock quartet Tortoise is approaching a 20-year history. Formed in Chicago in 1990, the Thrill Jockey stalwart began with an experimental take on melodic indie rock, using two bass guitars and three percussionists that switched between drums, vibraphones and marimbas. Slint co-founder Dave Pajo became the group's first guitarist, but jazz guitarist Jeff Parker (Isotope 217) took his place and found a unique cross-section between the genres. The rotating rhythm section of Doug McCombs, John Herndon, and Dan McEntire makes Tortoise a compelling live group, and Herndon's passion for distinctive electronic equipment helped make Standards, the band's 2001 full-length album, one of its most fusion-heavy releases with elements of hip-hop and dub. Because its members are involved in a host of other projects, Tortoise has released just five full-length albums, although its discography also includes a remix album, an EP collaboration with The Ex, a cover-album collaboration with Will Oldham under his Bonnie 'Prince' Billy moniker and a box set of rare material.
