If any part of you has a thing for Elvis Costello, then The Wes Hollywood Show is for you. The Chicago-based trio has that same catchy-melody-sung-with-a-smile sound as Costello but make it quite clear that their sound is their own. "We dig those old pop songs by the Jam, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, the Kinks," says frontman Wes Hollywood. "And it shows - but we've built a new sound. We call it the 'Solid Action' sound." So is the band really any different than old school power pop groups? Well yeah, actually. They combine modern/new wave influences with basic pop tenets - fresh pop abandon spent on upbeat songs about girls and heartache and girls. But it's by no means trite. The lyrics go beyond sing-alongable into the vein of well done.
The band is currently recording its second album, The Girls Are Never Ending at Uber Studio, a record whose sound new guitarist Mark Talent describes as "not like Jeff Buckley. Well, maybe Jeff Buckley getting his wisdom teeth pulled. By the Monkees..."
The Wes Hollywood Show is: Wes Hollywood (vocals, guitar), Patrick Thornbury (bass) and Jason Styx (drums).
