| Mars Williams' highly-regarded repertory band peforms pieces by A lbert Ayler. From Aylers' neo-bagpipe tunes, they devolve into the familiar Williams and Ken Vandermark screeching and squealing joined by the simultaneous improvisations of the other members. Most of the time it's quite noisy, punctuated by some very innovative solo work. The talented ensemble includes pianist Jim Baker, bassist Harrison Bankhead, percussionist Steve Hunt, cellist Fred Lomberg-Holm, as well as reedmen Williams and Vandermark. When they are on, they're a great band, but they sometimes seem to have difficulty adjusting to the big-band context.
