The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is the only museum in the Chicago-area that focuses exclusively on the history, culture and arts of North American native peoples.

The Museum's collections range from the Paleo-Indian period through the present day. Permanent exhibitions depict the Native American cultures of the Woodlands, Plains, Southwest, Northwest Coast and Arctic. Two temporary exhibit galleries have special thematic shows that change twice a year.

In addition to exhibits of visual arts and artifacts, the museum regularly offers programs that showcase storytelling, music, dance and other expressive forms that have traditionally been equally (if not more highly) valued in Native societies. Guest speakers, many of them Native American, have lecture on topics ranging from Native spirituality and healing to women in Plains Indian society. The museum has held screenings and discussions of feature films and documentaries on Native themes.

Doing research? A library of more than 5,000 books and periodicals, as well as video and audio tapes, can be used by visitors at the Museum. Admission: $5/$2.50 for students
