My experience at Yassa on 9/2/07 was BAD SERVICE AND RUDE AFRICANS WHO HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE IN AMERICA OR THE LAWS! THEY DON’T WANT TO REFUND YOUR MONEY! THEY HAVE AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT MENUS IN CIRCULATION AND THIS RESTAURANT DOESN’T CARRY ALL THAT IS ON THEIR MENU! Since they have two menus, they gave my sister and I the wrong order and old food. When we asked for a refund, the owner’s wife immediately got irate with me. She took the food out of the bags and started aggressively looking through each container. We hadn’t touched the food. She yelled, “There is nothing wrong with this food!” I asked her to please refund me for the entire order. She kept yelling, “this is not fare! This is abuse; you get refund for one orda’ not two!” I looked at her, and said, I know you all have good food, but this is a bad batch, can you please refund me my money? She got louder, “This is not fare! This is not fare! Is it because I am African and Black!” I was suddenly standing outside of myself. ESPECIALLY since I AM A DARK SKINNED AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO!

PART-II
She picked the laminated menu on the counter. “See, I give ya what she ask for! See, it sayz chickn’!” (DIFFERENT MENU) I moved back a little so she wouldn’t be in my face. “Are you going to give me my money,” I said to her. She said that is my lawyer over there, I am speakin to my lawya and she can hear everyting!” Then the supposed lawyer, who never looks my way, nor says anything to me, tells her to take order of the couple behind me. She yelled, and said “I can’t use this food. I can’t do noting’ weth this!” At this point, I felt myself getting upset and was prepared to call the police to settle this dispute. “So you are not going to give me back my money.” I said it sternly. “yea, I give ya back ya money!” she walks over to the register and opens it and starts plucking dollar bills with these long finger nails. Then she looks at me, “this is not fair, this abuse, I give ya back ya money! And I remmba ya face! I remmemba ya face! You come back in here I won’t take ya orda! I remmeba ya face! I won’t take ya orda!” then slams the register, hands me my money and walks off toward another customer.

Yassa is a great place to visit for a great taste of Senegal. On my visit I ordered the Fataya and the Yassa Chicken. The food was very fresh and flavorful. The Fataya was so delicious I ordered another platter to go. The food was plentiful. I took my daughter with me and we both shared the entree', the Yassa Chicken. I give Yassa an A+. I loved it.

Yassa's is a Sengalese restaurant, that is off the beaten track, but well worth the adventure. The atmosphere reminds me of a little local 'Island dive'. Staff is very friendly & helpful. Food is not only wonderful, but HUGE portions. And, talk about value - most entrees are $10 (served on a large oval platter - filled by a multi-portion entree, choice of side dish - recommend Plantans or Dojolluf rice, & salsa. We enjoyed grilled Lamb Chops (actually, arm chops - but tasty), and the Dibi Chicken (a dozen small pieces of grilled chicken). Also, recommend Chicken Brochette a/k/a shishkabob - 3 large skewers. Also, a dish called "soupa' something (not soup) - an interesting combo dish of stewed lamb and crab over white rice. Though not nec., we did order appetizer called Fataya, which was sort of a fish empanada (very crisp, tasty and served with a spicy and soury brown sauce on the side). The place is BYOB, but they also offer tasty combo fruit drinks. Can't wait to go back. (Not too far from City's Museum's, and also conveniently located only a few blocks from I90/94 Exit at 79th St.).
