My wife and I had dinner at chalkboard a few days ago and I must say, ... is not what I was expecting! The service was very slow and... slightly rude! the food was "nice" but over priced for the quantity you get! I don't thing this is a restaurant i would recommend to my friends! :(

I agree with George, I probably won't be going back. My friend and I arrived at 6:30 on a weeknight and they were already out of several dishes on their limited menu. It wasn't crowded but service was unbelievably, unapologetically slow from initial drinks all the way through dessert. I thought the prices were way high for the small portions and unimpressive flavors. I'm baffled by the great reviews this place has been getting. There are many restaurants in the neighborhood that are both more fun and a much better deal.

I visited Chalkboard on 5/7/07 after reading the nice review in Chicago Magazine. Overall I was very disappointed. I was seated quickly but had to wait 10 minutes before a server arrived. The menu had a nice variety but getting the food was another issue. The crabcake appetizer was a nice size and the house salad was good but forgetable. The service was slow and when the food arrived it was cold. We had the duck and the whitefish and both did not taste very good after arriving at room temperature. I have been to other recommended Chicago Magazine restaurants and this one does not even compare. I will probably never return.

Friends of mine recently opened a new restaurant. The address numbers are solar powered, the food organic where it can be, purchased fresh every day with a staple of some goods and aged goods, but all things prepared to order with an ever changing menu due to the availability of items. Thusly it is named Chalkboard, for the menu is written daily with the imagination of chef Gil Langlois. He is a gifted artist with experience at The Room and Rushmore among other restaurants.

In addition to opening his own restaurant, he and his wife Elizabeth also recently had their 1st baby. I was honored to be a guest at their local wedding celebration a couple of years ago, where in lieu of gifts they asked for donations to be made to organizations that would help facilitate the availability of marriage to all. I did not know them as well then, but the more I get to know them, the more i know that these are people who should succeed, who should be rewarded for the good work and good thoughts behind their actions.

The ambiance is elegant and the food outstanding. The wait staff was broken in by the restaurants 1st significant party of 28 disorderly agents and talent industry professionals who left sated and happy after stuffing themselves silly, breaking glasses and lighting a small fire on their table. (Gil: Sorry about that! Please let me back in.) After that, they are ready for you.

Oh my goodness. yum! When the 12 year old is raving abut the food days later one knows it must be great. The Mac & Cheese is divine! The food melts in one's mouth - and the wine list is extensive too.

The dining room centers on (you guessed it) two large chalkboards that feature (currently) the menu, as well as wines by the glass. I found it unique and quirky. The food was good as well- An extremely rich Tomato Bisque served with a shaved fennel salad and several quarters of a grilled (blue-cheese) sandwich which was sinfully good. Excellent crab cake that was quite light, buttery and delightful. Don't miss the smoked Mac and Cheese (which both my wife and I remembered from Rushmore) also extremely rich- For Entrées My wife ordered the Free Range Beef which came with two enormous Lobster Tortellini- I ordered the Bass-which came with a Ricotta and herb filling, as well as a celery root pure- Both were quite good (the beef was excellent) although I found that the Bass tasted great at its first and last tastes, but lagged a bit in the middle. The service was not great, but not bad as well-much like the chalkboards, our server was not pretentious and really personable and friendly-- I loved this, and felt it fit well with the concept of the restaurant- overall, a good dining experience
