312 Chicago delivers consistently. I look forward to the flavorful starter of olive topenade and hearty bread basket with foccacia and peasant-style white breads.
It had been some time since I'd come here for lunch. Once I had the starter, I couldn't recall what on earth had made me stay away so long.
With fall upon us, restaurants around the city are serving pumpkin and acorn squash soups. I love those this time of year. The squash soup at 312 Chicago was a little on the thin side and somewhat oily, but flavorful.
I had the risotto of the day. It came with two types of mushrooms and oxtail. The risotto itself is just the right texture - tender and firm. There was a flavor in the dish that I couldn't distinguish; it wasn't unpleasant, but a little unsettlingly because it gave the dish a gamely taste.
My co-worker had the squash soup and grilled Panini of prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato and fresh basil. Delicious. My co-worker was delighted by the "old-world" surroundings of the establishment. She also loved the starter.
The thing about 312 Chicago is that you come back for the consistent level of service and some of the dishes. However, you rate it as "good enough" because with all the dining choices available in Chicago that's what it is - not outstanding or spectacular, but good enough.
