Northwestern University School of Music has just downgraded its status as a fine music school by announcing that it will illiminate its organ major program. Certainly the program could be revised, revamped, re-visited. But the importance of the organ and church music to western music and musicians is undeniable-- and for a first rate music school to not offer an organ major doesn't strengthen-- but diminishes "the whole." How many piano majors will become concert pianists? NOT many... but as fine players they are not well rounded keyboard players if they don't have proper exposure to organ, harpsichord, etc. Looks like the school in relationship to community hasn't done its job of nuturing and educating young musicians. Now when the numbers (of majors) are down-- we play Walmart with the classical arts, and illiminate an important component from the mix-- just because we're not teaching adequately the importance of that component. Really sad...
