As one of the members of the Pyrotechniq Fire Troupe, we were honored to perform at this year's looptopia. The rain even cooperated once we lit the fire, which is fitting! Sharing our art with the people of Chicago in such a beautiful setting was truly magical.

Looptopia is such a great idea on paper. So on Friday night, two friends and I decided to go. Unfortunately, all three of us left completely underwhelmed and frustrated. Sure, we were there for only three hours and there were many groups we didn't see, and art is subjective and Looptopia is free.. but nonetheless, but what we saw left us wanting less.
The artistry of the shadow puppets outside Nordstrom Rack were impressive, but there was no arc to the story. After enduring mildly annoying Renaissance singers, we got into Blick art center and saw a just okay roots band and a new-age violinist while sitting on a filthy floor surrounded by high school artwork. After that, we went to the Daley Center to see the circus, but there was no way to see anything. Thoroughly frustrated, we went to the Cultural Center for a little improv to lighten our crabby moods. Three minutes later we decided to give up on Looptopia.
We know how incredible the art scene is in Chicago. We've enjoyed many shows and events over the years and feel proud to be a part of an incredible artistic community. Looptopia did not represent the artists and musicians we know and work with in Chicago. Looptopia felt more like a NACA convention (http://www.naca.org/naca/) than a celebration of our city's finest artists. I would fire the talent scout, spend some more time in the club's and lofts all over town and give it another go. Sorry for such a negative review guys. Glenn

I loved Looptopia! I agree that there was just to many people but all in all it was a blast! I was there from 7:00pm - 3:30 am and there was no trains running, maybe they will stay open till the event is finished. Make sure you take comfortable shoes because there is a lot of walking. Can't wait for 2008!

Well, I too went to looptopia with the highest of expectations and was somewhat disappointed. The events were packed with too many people (can you imagine how many more there would have been if it was nice out?).
But, that being said I did see a glimmer of some performances within the crush of humanity there. And what little I did see I liked. Plus, it was just cool to see so many interesting people trying to enjoy the festivities.
All in all looptopia was a great idea that wasn't quite executed to perfection. But you know what, I am sure it is extremely difficult to plan something like this since it has never been done before.
And I anticipate that since they have a good bead on what the response was, that next year this event might live up to the hype! Still not too bad for the price and I am looking forward to next year. Go Cubs!

I was very disappointed in the event. After all the hype, I was expecting much more. Even the music events outside were over-packed and it was impossible to see the band. Then Redmoon's slower-than-life, un-captivating events were maddening in the freezing cold.
Escaping to the Cultural Center turned out to be dangerous, as they over-packed the place, creating (I'm sure) fire hazards. It just felt crazy and scary being in a building packed beyond capacity. So, I left, thinking there may be a cafe to go to for some hot tea, but all I found was young revelers hootin' and hollerin' in the streets, kind of like Halloween without the costumes - pointless partying.
But maybe they just picked the wrong time of year! Better luck next year!

I dont know why everyone was so upset, I thought Looptopia rocked. Despite the fact that exhibits were closed down there was plenty to do, it was a city full of people wanting to have a good time. In terms of attendance, it was completely underestimated how many people would show up, but keep in mind it was the first time. Now that they know what to expect they can better prepare for next year. Im definetly going again.

i actually thought it was kinda fun. i was impressed with the turn out....and appreciated the goofy perfomance art on the street.
I went from 5p-1130p --- so i missed getting kicked out of any exhibits.
The Hard Rock was the wrong place for the Beginning...b/c the party was on the second floor and you had to take an elevator to get there....there were so many people they closed it down.
Also it was a little chilly
I would say over all the city was not prepared for the influx of people looptopia brought to the city

I was incredibly disappointed in Looptopia---I agree that it was a spectacular bust. The planning was horrible and I heard people complaining up and down the streets about how they couldn't get into anything; I also think it reflects very poorly on our hopes of Olympics hosting, which was another frequent topic of conversation. I spent more than five hours walking from line to line and never got into a thing. It all closed early or filled up quickly and this party "until sunrise" essentially ended at 12:30am. I would NOT go back to this event.

I came all the way from Indiana to see Looptopia and I was very disappointed. All of it seemed like an opportunity for Macy's to make more money! I didn't stick around long enough to get kicked out of Millenium Park but while I was there, everything was bland and boring. The highlight of the evening was a puppet show on the corner of Lake and Michigan. This made me seriously reconsider my view of Chicago's ability to host the Olympics.

Well everything closed early, the cops killed any gathering of people and many of the exhibits were cancelled due to over capacity. Numerous crowds of blank faces walked around aimlessly trying to figure out where many of the late/early morning events were taking place only to find that they were no longer running as scheduled. Despite the planner's best "efforts", a good time was had because of the group i was with. I felt like i was back in high school getting slammed in a park due to lack of any other options.
