I agree with Stephen 100%. The Violet Hour is one of my favorite state-side bars. To avoid the crowd, I took my wife shopping in Wicker Park and we hit the bar around 8:00 for a drink before dinner. Turned out to be a perfect evening. I make it a point to visit the bar every time I am in Chicago.

i don't think that it's pretentious at all; although i understand how one might draw that conclusion. i was afraid of the same thing - that is until i got in. i then realized that this place is very focused on creating a perfect atmosphere for you to enjoy with your company. being pretentious would work counter to what i believe is this goal.
every person in the bar is treated equally and with great service; everyone has a seat and there could never be more people in the establishment than they could properly service. the music selection and volume along with the lighting, decoration and overall atmosphere seem to have been chosen with great attention to detail and i consider this to be a breath of fresh air.
if the whole waiting thing isn't something you want to do then go during a week night or off-beat hour. this isn't the type of place that does VIP or treats some people differently than others. there are customers who are experiencing violet hour (who have waited their turn in line) and there are those who are waiting for their chance. you can't blame violet hour for taking care of its customers first, no matter how many people want to be customers.
i enjoyed my drinks and food, but really just wanted to comment on what i believe is the real beauty of this establishment: respect and atmosphere.

Love it! My boyfriend and I checked it out for a drink after dinner and were very impressed- even for a Sunday night! The ambiance, service & product were all to be enjoyed- highly recommended.

My friends and I had the time of our lives here. We came here after our High School Winter formal of 2008 and they showed us a very very great time. In fact, our limo driver who was supposed to take us home got arrested and The people inside the restaurant let us stay there even though they were closing. And then they moved some tables and put on some of our music and let us dance while we waited for our new limo. I had thee best day of my life there. I recommend it to anyone

Great concept and as long as you admit that you're shallow upfront. If so, you'll enjoy trying to prove how cool you are to gain entry from the $7 per hour ex rent-a-dick doorman so you can pay $12 for a hopped up Manhattan. Timeout Chicago continues to jizz about this place, but I don't get it. Check it out, but bring a sandwich for the waiting line and most importantly, make sure you're not wearing last season's Pradas!

This place is fantastic!! Finally, here’s a place in Chicago which makes quality (delicious and one of a kind) drinks set in an incredible ambience where conversation is possible. I would recommend this place to everyone. The whole staff was personable and welcoming. Definitely the ideal place to enjoy with both, friends or a date for a classy evening. Great scene.. never over-crowded and a beautiful décor...this is quickly becoming one of my favorite places for drinks in Chicago. If you haven’t tried it, I don’t know what you are waiting for!!

Great bar, limited capacity. Once full, people unfortuneately have to wait, no matter how hot you are. Go back to LA and if you want a civilised cocktail come back on a weekenight. The weekend is busy imagine that!

WORST BAR EVER. Seriously, we are not in LA people. What is with the pretension? My hot sister and 2 hot girlfriends waited in line for 2 hours to have a drink. The hostess and bouncer were so embarrassed that they couldn't get us in, that they actually stopped speaking to us! For real. No reservations? Apparently the girl inside was allowed to plan a party for 40+ friends that got VIPed inside each time they cut in front of us in line. The trick is to show up the week before in person and strike a deal. Why did we wait? We just wanted to talk to each other and drinking was not a priority. Finally a guy across the street at Pontiac was so ashamed of our wait, he offered us free drinks to just leave the line. He was embarrassed for all of Chicago. As he should have been.
