I have ended up eating at Macello's many times with my son or friends because the food, simply put, it the best gourmet comfort food in Chicago. The seafood, pork and steak are generous portions and quality. The pasta is unpretentious and filling but also original and flavorful. The staff appear to have low turnover in the ~8 months we have been going there. The Ambience is lovely and romantic (if you are on a date) as well as warm and comforting. We would love to eat there a couple times a week but the economy won't let us. Also, the fiori latte gelato is a lovely dessert. You can take home some proscuitto (they have a case of butcher's and cheese goods up front) or other culinary delights for purchase, if your wish. Highly recommended, with very helpful waitstaff. On my little boy's birthday the Manager sang happy birthday to him in Italian.

I think Macello's has great potential as the location and ambience are great and the menu seems appealing. Unfortunately we just had one of the worst waiters I ever came across in Chicago. He seemed to be new but that was no excuse: he brought the wrong drinks first of all. He brought us food without silverware. He charged us one bottle of wine we didn't have. We asked for bread, it never came until we reminded him 20 minutes later. Then, he spilled somebody else's pasta sauce over my wool coat and just said "I apologize" he didn't offer to clean it or pay for dry cleaning. Only when I got home did I realize the amount of stains I had on my coat. Then it took us 40 minutes to pay for the bill. We tried to split it by 6 people and the waiter calculated the wrong amount to all of our credit cards (which was much too high). It took them forever to void that and charge the correct amount. On top of that, he automatically added 18% tip. For what I ask you?? At no time did we see any manager we could talk to or complain to. They didn't offer any proper apology or discount from our bill.
Overall the experience was really really poor! It's a shame, we wanted to have our company's Christmas party at Macello as we love the ambience. But that is definitely NOT going to happen now. Maybe if you're lucky with the waiter you will have a better experience. I think the food is only average but good. However, I don't think I will be back!

I think that macello's food and service is amazing and the food is to die for. also it was awsome to watch the pizza chefs make the pizza in front of you and the place is very decorative. I loved it.
