I think someone has an ax to grind! Ms. Schubert is a solid conductor who is well-prepared for rehearsals and seems to enjoy herself more than she did a few years ago. I think she has mellowed out a lot. I also appreciate the repertoire that she selects: a great blend of major pieces, and a healthy dose of lesser-known pieces. The Halloween concert at the University of Chicago is especially entertaining!

Please note: Ms. Schubert's official bio states that she is the 1982 winner of the American Conductors Competition. Sounds very prestigious, right? Um, yeah... Do a google search for "American Conductors Competition" and remark on the result: 4 of 6 hits are Barbara Schubert websites. Impressive, indeed.

While, I'm very sure that Ms. Schubert is an excellent conducter and what not, she does nothing to foster music appreciation in the community. Nor does she encourage students at the University to follow their love of music. Rather she is discouraging, and extremely condescending. In order for an orchestral conductor to truly be successful, he/she must learn to criticize conductively, without disparaging a musician's playing ability.
