First and for most, let me get things straighten out.... Lawrel Liqours may be called alot of things when you new and we don't know who you are...But to ME Lawrel Liqours is like my 2nd home. I practically lived in and out of that bar since i was 7yrs old. We useto go there as kids while my mother would buy he drinks and i can vouch for dave tasker, i as well as my siblings dug into the same bucket of lolly pops and bozooka gum...

I use to walk in there with my Girl Scouts and sell cookies. I would sell out!!! Every year!!! I still till this day walk into that bar... know everyone's name... order my drink, walk to the back and play APA!!!

During the day, yeah you get the old folks and hard labor men... but it's peaceful in there!!! At night you have the fun crowd.. Mostly pool players playing their league or neighborhood friends and family members.

I love Lawrel Liqours!!! I never in my life been to a bar like this!!! Who can resist being around Papa Joe, Uncle Pauly, Mike, Tony... the other Joe...lol... And what about " The Doc ".... It's all REAL at Lawrels. To me it's unforgettable!!!

So unless you have nothing better to do in your life, stop in, give this bar a chance. Believe me when i say this... They have given everyone a chance and they deserve the same!!!!

AND AS FAR AS THE DECOR....IT'S PROBABLY PUT TOGETHER BY BEER VENDERS AND LOCALS WHO DONATE TO THE WALL ART,AND EMPLOYEES THAT SLAP TOGETHER "DECOR" AFTER "UNCLE SAM" TAKES HIS SHARE AND EMPLOYEES ARE PAID.BUT KNOW THIS...THIS IS THE AMERICAN DREAM!THIS BUSINESS HAS BEEN FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE EARLY 1950'S.THIS IS WHAT EARLY IMMIGRANTS CAME TO THIS COUNTRY LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITY TO EARN AN AMERICAN DOLLAR TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY WITH. THE CALDERONE FAMILY HAS OWNED AND OPERATED THIS ESTABLISHMENT SINCE THE 1950'S AND HAVE BEEN PAYING TAXES AND EMPLOYING THE LOCALS FOR 60 YEARS...AND ARE SOME OF THE NICEST AND MOST KINDEST PEOPLE IN THE CITY.THEY HAVE GIVEN MILK AND BREAD TO WOMEN WITH KIDS WHO COULD NOT AFFORD IT.SO IF YOU WANT ED DEBEVIKS OR HARD ROCK CAFE THEN THIS IS NOT YOUR PLACE... BUT IF YOU WANT A REAL LIFE SLICE OF CHICAGO AND A PLACE YOU CAN JUST BE YOURSELF AND HAVE A BEER AND A SHOT WITHOUT BEING JUDGED THAN THIS IS YOUR PLACE.CHECK YOUR ATTITUDE AT THE DOOR. GO THERE, SIT DOWN,RELAX,ORDER A BEER AND A SHOT AND HAVE FUN BASKING IN ALL THE AMERICAN HISTORY AND REALITY T.V. ALL ROLLED INTO ONE

AS A CHILD I WOULD GO SHOPPING WITH MY FATHER THERE.THE CASHIERS HELD OPEN BUCKETS OF SUCKERS THAT I COULD STICK MY HAND INTO AND GRAB AS MANY AS I COULD WITH ONE HAND. THEN LATER AS A TEEN I WOULD GO THERE SEEKING EMPLOYMENT AND WOULD BAG ICE IN THE SUMMER AND STOCK COOLERS FOR A FAIR WAGE.I WAS A CASHIER AND EVENTUALLY WENT OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BUILDING AND BEGAN BARTENDERING.AS I REMEMBERED THE OLDER GENTS WOULD BE THERE ON SUNDAY MORNING FOR THE SHOT AND A BEER DEAL.(KNOW THIS... DEFINATELY CANNOT PICK YOUR CUSTOMERS)...AND AS IN ALL PUBLIC BARS YOU CAN COLD FILTER THE BEER BUT YOU CAN NEVER COLD FILTER THE MINDS OR SPEECH OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!THEY SAY WHAT COMES TO MIND!!!

Where it's true that Lawrel Liquors is not your average over-priced and over-hyped young urban hangout, there's something to said about a neighborhood bar you can go to just be yourself. While some prefer the see-and-be-seen culture, there are hoards of America's working-class citizens (thousands in this neighborhood alone)who can appreciate going to a place "where everybody knows your name", and being able to have an inexpensive drink at the end of a long hard day.

The POINT of a place like Lawrel's is that real people exist, and they comprise the majority of people living in the city. Establishments like Lawrels are the real fabric of Chicago, and this shows by the fact that they've been in business over 30 years... not many of the overdone trendy bars in the city can make that claim. Lawrel's customers are honest, hard-working people who've come to think of Lawrel's as a second home, and the owners as family, a feeling that is very much returned. Speak your mind, say your piece, and be part of the family.

Like the last reviewer said... the patrons speak of politics, urban issues, unemployment, and so on - topics in the hearts and on the minds of most people these days - the difference is that being yourself and speaking your mind isn't "cool" in most places. Lawrel's, regardless of who you are, accepts all... if more places could say the same, the city would be a much friendlier place.
