If you've never been you must go! I found a stack of books I've been stalking for ages and another stack I never knew I needed. The place is magic, beautiful and odd. The walls are covered with an art installation called The Gathering Crowd it is a sculptor's dream of facial expression, hundreds of small clay sculptures for your consideration. The have sweet pearl jewelry and sharks teeth. I took home a beautiful framed beetle for a song. But back to the books.....so many great books it made me sweat. The prices were terrific. I mean some really special stuff for like 5 or 10 bucks. If you go you'll be glad you did. It’s a short block from lake and a nice beach. I had a dreamy walk post-Pillow to think.

Every time I have ever walked into a used book store I've been looking for The Armadillo's Pillow.

this is such a sweet used bookstore. they are extremely organized but not in a static, chain bookstore way -- the atmosphere is comfortable and dreamy and they have lots of books on gender studies, though these are seperated into "womens studies" and some other category -- but still. good for me because i was looking for judith halberstam and even though they didnt have it, walked away with leslie feinberg for 5 bucks! 5 bucks! *swoon* what a lovely store.

Well-priced, quality stock. On the lower end of Chicago used bookstore prices. Visited for the first time yesterday and walked out with two vintage firsts purchased for well under their value. Fun atmosphere, though (my one complaint) the rather oppressive aura of incense may give you a headache or trigger your gag reflex. I look forward to going back anyway.

Armadillo's Pillow is my favorite bookstore ever. Everytime I go there, I always come out with something. The atmosphere is calming and yet there's always that exciting anticipation that something good is somewhere on the shelves waiting for you to open it up and take a look. The owners are nice and always ready to help. And if books aren't your thing, there's always the jewelry and the incense. So cool!

I love the Armadillo's Pillow... it is easy to get to by train or bus, and is near the heartland cafe, ennui, flats and sharpes and a bunch of other excellent 49th ward spots. My favorite thing to do is to just grab a few books a random and sit down in one of their comfy chairs and just relax. If I find something I like, i buy it, if not, no sweat... the AP folks are laid back and super kind. If you have a book in mind, they will take the name down and give you a call if they get a copy. I only wish they made tee shirts so i could sport one around town and show my love for the place.
