Once a Mexican food addict, I was surprisingly disappointed with the lack of authentic Mexican restaurants in Chicago when I moved here two years ago. I have since found a well-kept secret that doesn't require me to travel all the way to Pilsen-- El Pacifico. Their portions are generous and they never fail to provide the requisite chips and salsa. Admittedly, El Pacifico could use some remodeling. However, though they are lacking in ambience (think tacky lavender walls and pots of artificial violets velcroed to the patio tables), El Pacifico more than makes up for their lack of decorating skills with yummy food and deliciously strong margaritas. They are super affordable and the servers are always highly accomodating. They are also open late, which is perfect for a late night pit stop after a show at Schuba's (located across the street).
