I had a great experience at Dee's Place. My friend and I met up for dinner, and enjoyed everything that we ordered. I'm sad that my leftover container went home with her instead of me! So, we can start with how amazing the fried catfish was, and it wasn't even my entree. I had the jerk chicken, which was also amazing, but really, the catfish blew me away! I've had a fair share of fried catfish and I generally enjoy it, but this fried catfish was flakey, light, no bones, delicious batter, great portion size, a huge step above any other fried catfish I've ever had.

We started with the fried okra & fried green tomatoes, and I had the jerk chicken with red beans and rice. Each meal is served with a yummy piece of jalapeno cornbread too. The red beans and rice were nice and light tasting. The mac & cheese was the bomb!

The actual restaurant was cute too--nice decor, comfy space, laid back yet attentive feel, food was all hot and cooked to order, our server was really friendly and Dee was really sweet when she stopped by our table. Check it out--great food, great service, great atmosphere, great price, easy parking, convenient by public transit--can't beat it!

Big mistake! Save your money! This was the worst demonstration of service and food quality my wife and I have witnessed in our many years visiting the Chicago area. For starters, we walked over three miles just to get to this place that was so highly praised on at least two internet sites. When we arrived there were only four or five tables occupied by patrons. Two tables were done with their meals and awaiting the check. Only one waiter was present and he was in no hurry. After we finally got menus, we waited to speak to the waiter again before ordering. We asked for his recommendations on what was good. Big mistake! He recommended the fried chicken to me, and my wife ordered catfish. It took almost 30 minutes to get our order, but we were unaware of how much worse things were going to get. The food was horrible! My chicken was hard and must have been previously cooked (possibly the day before). The greens were tasteless and the yams were from the can, old, and tasted terrible. My wife's catfish was truly sad and nearly cold. My first thought was "Isn't there some legal requirement for minimum restaurant food quality standards in this city?". And to top it all off, the prices were somewhat higher than we had anticipated. Needless to say, we will never visit this restaurant again, no matter what is posted on the internet. They all should be ashamed of themselves. We just wish they would stop calling this stuff "soul food."

Dee's was a tremendous experience. Its menu had everything you would want from a soul food place. I had the fried chicken and it is the best I have had in Chicago. I tasted the Mac n' Cheese, Greens, and Candied Yams, and they all were great.

The staff was friendly and provided good service.

    Nothing bad about it.
