My family and I stayed at the Essex Inn 7/20/07. It was close to everything but even though it had been renovated there was still work to be done. Our room smelt like dirty socks from the air-conditioner. The receptionist in the lobby were not helpful at all and kept referring us to Toney the bellhop who was wonderful, of course I'm sure he was looking for a tip. The Hotel restaurant "The Savoy" had the rudest waitresses and staff I had ever met. They ignored us and other guests when we asked for coffee refills. The price was one of the best around, so use your own judgement.

I stayed at the Essex in Dec. 2006. My stay was horrible. Do not stay at this hotel. I made my reservations 6 months out. I called when I was 6 hours out to make sure my room would be available and was told everything was right on schedule. When I arrived I was told the room I reserved was not available. If I didn't like it then I could check out and find another hotel. My friend had to sleep on the floor. There was toenail on our floor. The bathroom was horrible and had a leak. Pillows were dirty. They also lock all the doors in the evenings and force everyone to use 1 small door on the side. Again do not waste your money on this hotel. I'm not a very picky traveler but this place stinks.

I stayed at the Essex in January 2005. All the bedding was new, and it was beautiful. Location was great, rooms were vey clean, and the staff were helpful and friendly. I think it is a terrific value. Would definitely stay there again.

Two of us stayed at the Essex in June, 2005 for 4 nights. The lobby is very small, but clean. The desk personnel are friendly. Luggage help when arriving may be slow or non-existant. Some customers had a misunderstanding about the cost of telephone calls. Be sure you understand the rules before using. My room was supposed to be smoke free, but it had been used by smokers with burn marks on furniture. The draperies were in very poor condition...dirty, worn rips and stains. Carpet was warn and stained. Bed spreads were old. Room was well cleaned though with courteous room help. The bath needs refurbished badly. There was a hole in the tile from previous fixtures. The hotel is at the end of the strip, but close to the parks. The hotel restaurant is good for breakfast and lunch with good service and reasonable city prices. There are not nicer restaurants near this hotel, except for high price hotel restaurants like at the Congress or Hilton. Price of room was in the $125 plus taxes.

I stayed at the Essex in December 2004. I thought it was a terrific value! Decent rooms, great location, and a fabulous indoor pool and gym. Okay, the bathrooms are a little small, but who spends a lot of time in the bathroom when you're visiting a great city like Chicago? The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. When I go back to Chicago, I'm staying at the Essex.

The Essex Inn has beautiful photos on their website - too bad you can't see the stained/burned carpets. If you take a shower there the water will reach your ankles before you’re done. The rooms smell bad and the beds have dust mites (look at the crease of the beds before you go to sleep and verify that the sheet don't have blood on them from the bugs biting you or the previous person that slept there).

I want to let everyone know of these conditions because the management did not want to listen to my claims.

The hotel is in bad condition, I don't recommend it to anyone.

THe hotel host are great at attending people. But when it came across to eating lunch downstairs at printer's row that was another story. The lunch was great but what happened to the desserts? I knew a person that was an employer there. Margarita Figueroa, I heard that she had been fired why? I sure want to taste her deserts!!!

The hotel was indeed in a good location. It was clean, but in desparate need of redecorating. Being next to a 5 star hotel it needs to be upgraded. A friend of mine stayed there and I visited them and was definately not impressed with the rooms. This is a bargain for someone just looking for a place to just sleep. Reminds me of a motel.
