I worked with Fred Applegate during the Guthrie Theatre seasons 1981 to 1983 and have since happily watched him show up on tv, in movies, on Broadway. He is a reliable delight. One of my all-time favorite theater memories is Fred's "Nicely-Nicely Johnson" bringing down the house night after night with "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." What a voice! Such power in his performance, and such a funny guy. No doubt he'll be wonderful in "The Producers."

I worked with Fred Applegate 25 years ago at Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse in Rock Island, Ill., when he was playing King Pellinore in "Camelot." (I was one of the knights.) He was a delightful comic actor, a real audience favorite during his time there. I'm delighted to see he's now playing Max Bialystock in "The Producers" on Broadway, as of late September 2003. (Footnote: another knight in that long-ago production of "Camelot" was Chicago actor Don Forston ...)
