"The Merchant of Venice" stereotypes the "Jew" and "Christian," money lender versus moral indignation. The very name of Shylock conjures up an image of a grubbing money lender, whether you are familiar with Shakespeare or not. The play has been over"played" and over exposed year after year, production after production until "anti-semitisn" itself becomes a stereotype. Such is Barbara Gaines' production of "The Merchant" at the much over rated Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Modern dress is only a thin veil of creativity in a meagre attempt to update this classic of money vs. moral, Jew vs. Christian, banking vs. bankruptcy. The Jew charges an outrages interest rate and the Christian cries for justice because he is poor, educated, and the same heritage as the judge. Come on now - Portia could have paid it off with her weekly allowance. A weak attempt trying to make this play more cynical than originally written. Money is money, revenge is revenge; get over it. Theater goers - save your money and don't get a loan to see this one.
