After just returning home from seeing Mary Zimmerman's current production,"Mirror of the Invisible World," I can only say that she is absolutely in the lead for a new theatre version of the "Velvet Elvis" award. She now has a trademark on her use of flying cloth to indicate mood and transition in the play. "We got it already" could be the most polite thing to say, except for the fact that tonight's production featured a huge delay in raising one of the swaths of fabric and actually spiced up a rather dull and boring production. If this was intended, you could say it was brilliant directing, but alas it probably was not. Saving money on casting is good, except when men's parts are not convincingly done by the women playing them. For the price of the tickets, at least male and female parts could be done by the correct gender or voice range. The final tale was actually better, especially after the stimulating stall in the curtain which brought the only spontaneous applause from the audience all night. "Paint by number", and "Elvis on Velvet" may sell at the art shows, but a director of Zimmerman's current fame should reach out for more originality. Perhaps it is just too much effort and risk on her part when you know a tried(or tired) and true formula will pull in the lock step critics and audience. After being a huge fan of her Pericles production, I now truly wonder if I would ever go to see another of her shows.
