HaiYen is the best VN restaurant in Chicago. The food in here is quite compatable with some of the best Vietnamese restaurants in LA. HY has a long menu list with so many authentic dishes. 7 beef courses are very good and you can break down to couple dishes if you don't like them all. All grilled noddles are excelent..You'll love it

The food here is Authentic Vietnamese! It is almost as good as my mother's cooking, and that's definitely saying a lot. The staff are always friendly, the food is always fresh and prepared to perfection!
The price point here is amazing, you get huge delicious portions practically for pennies.
This is my Vietnamese restaurant of choice. I go there ALL the time,it never disappoints.
It is clean, presentation is good and the food is brought to your table quickly, go there and bring your appetite!

Adventure seekers beware: this is a difficult resaurant to navigate. Hai Yen is regarded by many as the best Vietnamese restaurant in the Argyle area, but I wasn't very impressed. The menu is massive, and had little help in translation for one inexperienced in Vietnamese cuisine. The owners were very nice, as they were dining with many of the staff, but our waitress was very disorganized. I went with the classic pho broth and found some sort of gross steak-ums included as my meat. Top it off with a rather plain ambience and a beer list akin to your average dive bar, I don't plan on returning.

Visiting for a conference at Northwestern, I stumbled upon Hai Yen, just 2 blocks east of the Argyle St. station on the red line. There were several other restaurants, but Hai Yen caught my eye because it was fairly small, decorated well (no gaudy neon signs), and had quite a few people dining inside. After debating between rice plate and pho, I decided to order Com Suon (#36, $6.99), described on the menu as "Pork chop marinated with garlic, lemongrass, honey, then griled to perfection." Actually, everything says "grilled to perfection." I was blown away at how good it was: meat was lean and tender, rice was moist, pickled veggies were perfect, and slices of cucumber and tomato were fresh and tasty. I was impressed with this pork chop, I ordered an appetizer, Chao Tom (#10, $6.99, 3 pieces), which is described on the menu as "Ground shrimp wrapped around a sugar cane and grilled to perfection. Served with salt and pepper and a slice of lime." It was heavenly. The shrimp cake was moist and seasoned perfectly, so the salt and pepper mix wasn't necessary. To top it off, the service was excellent, the restaurant was clean, yes, including the bathroom, and the price is good. Excellent godsend for a hungry tourist like me, craving decent comfort food.
