Like others, I almost hate telling anyone about this place because I may not get a room when I want one! I love this place not for any special amenities, but for its value, location, and free parking (a large parking lot but I have parked in an adjacent business lot when returning late because the place was booked solid and I think some rooms had more than one car there). Yes, I've encountered a cranky desk person, but sometimes you get what you give in attitude. In a time when big city lodging is exorbitantly priced, HoC is a decent option. As for the neighborhood-anyone who ever goes beyond glitzed up downtowns (where street crimes and thefts happen all the time, don't be fooled!) knows that "real" neighborhoods aren't perfect--this is NOT a terrible area, though. Like any city, just be aware of your surroundings and your own demeanor. I've stayed here quite a few times and have never had any problem whatsoever. It is also close to gay favorites Touche and Jackhammer (can walk) and a short drive from the Eagle and, a little further, Boystown. It's great for fans of basic kitschy retro motels, too!

We stayed at the Heart O' July 14 - 17, 2006. We were very pleased with the location, value, and cleanliness of the motel. It is an older unit, but well maintained and clean. It is a no-frills motel---but has all the basics. The lower price with free off-street parking makes it stand out. It was recommended to us by a very reputable local organization that uses it for various guests. The continental breakfast is basic (donuts, coffee, juice) but there are ample eating establishments within 2 miles of the motel south on N Clark Ave. We would certainly consider staying there again.

I stayed here last week. As a single woman traveler, felt safe. The room is all that I needed. Very clean. I was delighted to be able to leave my car and take the Clark Street Bus (#22) into downtown. There are many nice cafe's and shops along Clark Street to visit as well. Will visit Chicago more often now that I know of this wonderful motel.

Excellent place. A friend and I stayed for a cheap weekend in the city. Clean and convenient. I felt like i was staying in a retro museum - really impressive.

Three girlfriends and I stayed at Heart o'Chicago 9/04 after reading about it in Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel. Barebones, but very well kept up and very clean. (Bring your own shampoo, alarm clock, and hairdryer.) Also a fun "blast from the past." The best feature is FREE PARKING! Saves you at least $30 a day over downtown hotels. I am going back this weekend.

This motel is perfect for a single woman traveling alone. Free contnental breakfast, clean, safe room, VERY reasonably priced, easily accessible location. The staff is professional and friendly, and provide a free 'welcome packet' with brochures, maps, and tourist information. I stayed at a pricey downtown hotel the first time I came to Chicago and it was filthy. After I found Heart of Chicago I never went back to the overpriced downtown hotels again. Best value in Chi-town!
