Went on Sunday for lunch. Service was fine...the place was relatively empty. I've read all these reviews and I understand how the service can fluctuate seeing how different waitstaff work on different days and after all we are all human and entitled to our good and bad days/moments. However I can't imagine that the food would fluctuate or vary by much since most likely there are probably 2 main chefs (maybe 3 at the most). Our food was just unbelievably good. I am indian and have been eating indian food all my life - this doesn't make me an expert but experience must count for something. i only stuck to the veggie dishes so i can't comment on the meat...but this is what indian food is supposed to taste like. i've been all around the chicago/suburban circuit and no place comes close to this. my other favorite places are rasoi off of manheim and gaylords in schaumburg. if you like either of those im guessing you will like hema's. i wil have to go there again to confirm that the food is consistant - if it is than this is THE spot. The puree and eggplant dish were my favorite. my only complaint is that they were out of okra....on a sunday at noon....huh? That was a head scratcher...One would think they could walk down the block and get some from the million indian markets littering the streets.

    go bulls.

I just has probably the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. At 5p on a Saturday evening I walked into an empty restaurant. No customers, just wait staff. As things have been "gussied up" since I was last there, I rather sheepishly asked if it was possible to order food to go. I was told yes and given a menu. I decided on Vegetable Biryani at $9.99. I went up to where the wait staff were standing and placed my order. I asked if any bread came with. The waiter who appeared to be the maitre di very rudely said no. Another waiter asked if I wanted rice and the maitre di told him that I didn't. ??? I don't get it. This restaurant apparently didn't want my business for some reason. I wouldn't go back there if it was free. What happened to that great little place with the warm and welcoming people? (And no, I'm as far from a fussy yuppy as you can get.)

Disappointing place...completely pathetic...never go....i thought may be it is more authentic but found that simple butter chicken sucks here..may be it was not the day..i don't know...i will never go again...2 people cooking the whole food and other two serving....there is no service...

Extremely disappointing experience: both in food and service. Waiters totally unprofessional: brought the cork opener when asked to open the bottle of wine. Place is dark and unclean. Feel totally unwelcome. Food is average at best.

Wonderful Indian food, at a great price. Service was friendly and warm. BYOB. Only negative -- they don't have a Clay Oven, so no Tandoori.

if you are looking for good indian food...then this is the place...the decor is interesting but okay..the staff is very friendly (don't understand y everyone doesnt't think so?)..it doesn't take forever for the food to come out...maybe 15 minutes for the entrees and 5 minutes for the appetizers which i think is pretty average..one of the best indian restaurants on devon ave..must try the potato cutlets and the lamb vindaloo..try hema's kitchen if you want GREAT FOOD..

Went there tonight (Saturday) at 8:00 and the place was moderatly busy. Service was prompt and waited maybe fifteen minutes for the food order for a party of three - also got appetizers in like five minutes. Had some chicken curry dishes, biryani, roti, nan, and rice. All was perfect with fair portion sizes. All the complaints I have read on this site must be from a bunch of fussy yuppie pussies.

My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night. Our server was one of the worst in Chicago. She took our orders, left, and didn't return until we got the bill. We had to ask another server for more bread! We have eaten a lot of Indian food, but not in Chicago. The food was too oily. The chicken wasn't breast meat, instead it was a mix of dark and white meat. Overall, it is poor value considering service, portion size, and price because you must pay for rice and/or bread seperately.

After reading the initial reviews of this place, I was a bit hesitant about visiting the place.

Went there on a friday night. The staff was pretty courteous, didn't have to wait long for the food and the bill wasn't steep.

All in all I had a great experience there, food was pretty tasty.. I've been eating Indian food all my life and I will recommend this place to others - Don't let the red walls throw you off.. maybe its a valentine's thing :)
