I came to Chicago for a week's holiday from England and had already looked on Google for Irish Pubs in the area. I came across the Hidden Shamrock and had been on their homepage to see what they had to offer.

I turned up at the Hidden Shamrock on the saturday morning for a quick drink and was greeted by Cathy (the Manager). When looking at the menu, I instantly went for the traditional irish breakfast and have to say, it was bloody lovely (they even had a decent bit of black pudding)!! Being half Irish myself and having travelled to Ireland many times before to see family, I was partial to the odd pint of the black stuff. The Guinness was exceptionally good and one pint turned into 7 before I knew it!! If ever i'm in Chicago again, I would definately go back to the Hidden Shamrock, for the friendly atmosphere, good beer and great food. Just make sure you know what black pudding is, before eating it ;)

I don't know about the irish music, but the Wednesday night open mic is like one of the best kept live music secrets in Chicago. The host band is called Your Little Ponies, and they have a wicked sense of humor that really breaks the ice. The regulars that frequent the open mic are coincidentally a diverse, talented group of musicians and a nice bunch of guys and girls. I mean, when was the last time you DANCED at an open mic? Much less felt the need to? Anyway, the guys that run it give away prizes and keep the volume to a reasonable level so you're not deaf by 11:30. And there's pool and leather couches in the back room if you just want to get a little break in. I'm telling you, it's very cool and totally free.

average at best....my husband and I thought they were full of tricks but not much substance. The fiddle player and the guitar player seemed to have weird rhythm or something like that. I'd pass on that band. Whoever wrote that first review sounds like they were in the band!

I just got back from seeing the most incredible band at Quigley's in Naperville...they are called the Katie Sullivan Band. I don't think I've ever seen so much talent on a single stage before... The singer Katie Sullivan was astounding with her soulful melodies. She sang beautiful melodic lines as well as down home style blues with incredible ease. The fiddler, Matthew Stedman knocked my socks off with his astounding fiddle playing. I've never heard a fiddler perform with such passion and vigor. I swore he was playing a guitar. Speaking of the guitar, the guitarist, Tom Leach was phenomenal at playing leads and rhythm alike. I've never seen a style quite like his. A wonderful combination of celtic, bluegrass, and funk. Lastly, the versatility of this band is out of this world. They played Blues, Celtic, Reggae, Bluegrass, Pop. You name it, they played it. This band is a must see, and I hope to see them at Quigley's again soon!!!

Saw a band at the Irish American Heritage Center (5th Province Pub) that will blow you away!! The Katie Sullivan Band, rocked the house - this woman sings the blues, Irish, Janis Joplin- plays the guitar and harmonica. This band, with a fiddler that is out of this world is worth checking out!!! I would come back to the 5th Province to see her (them) instead of any of the bigger name acts around Chicago.
