I was in two weeks ago, and was not pleased. I came in on Friday evening. We walked by and decided to stop in after hearing the music outside. We were offered "half cover" for $10 each for my wife and I. We sat down, listened to the band. They were decent, although I have heard much better in Chicago (with NO COVER). We heard the doorman seating people all around us at no cover at all, so we really felt ripped off. We decided to leave when the band went on break after one song. The waitress told us that it was a two drink minimum. We explained we had just sat down, payed cover when others didn't, and didn't feel like sitting through a long break watching a stupid dvd. She brought us the check. Here is the fun part- 2 martinis at $15 each! (tiny!!!), 2 $10 covers ($20), and two MINIMUMS $10. The bill was totaled at $60, with a $12 tip added on... $72 dollars for five minutes and two tiny martinis. The waitress took about 10 minutes to even returned (smelled like smoke when she came back), and argued with us. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the Back Room a couple of weeks ago while I was in town for a convention. My hotel sent me over with passes, and I was mildly impressed. The doorman was pretty rude, as I felt like I was somehow getting scammed at the door. I sat down, and my waitress, Taylor was nice and friendly and helpful in telling us what else do to in Chicago for the next day. We always had fresh drinks (although very small, and VERY expensive). The band, Maurey, was good, but could have used some vocals. Not a bad place to visit in Chicago.

Rip off! This place is nice, and the music was nice. But it is definitively in the money making business! 20 dollar cover is just the beginning. Then, it's a minimum of 2 drinks per gig, and 40% tip! I got 2 spring water for 12 dollars, 10 dollars service on top of 20 cover. It is really not worth it, just go to the green mill instead.

I seriously have no idea what some of these people are talking about. Stay at home you complaining; cheap skate crybabies! You are in Chicago on Rush street what do you expect the prices to be? Actually, my husband and I visited many bars on Rush and they ALL had a cover charge to get in and ALL of their drink prices were HIGHER than the BackRoom..and The BackRoom was the only club with a cool atmosphere and awesome live music and a killer staff that is all about service. This is Chicago..you get what you pay for...Go back to your trailer parks and drink a case of Schlitz...stay out of the city and out of the coolest live music club in the city. I know how these web sites work...Someone comes into a club gets sticker shock when they see their bill and decides to go online a trash the establishment to get even.... The problem is that The BackRoom has been around for over 45 years...SO THEY MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. And this past Saturday in the middle of a financila crisis in America...They were sold out and were turning people away at the door....Don't listen to the scammers and losers on this website..Go check out this legendary Chicago night club for yourself...you will be blown away!

This place sucks. The staff was rude and the drinks sucked even harder. Too much pretention for a seemingly "cool" jazz lounge. Our waitress that night, Amanda, was not on top of her game. She was slow, unattentive, and was smoking outside the joint most of the night instead of doing her job. I have never had service as horrible as that. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor...Tell them to avoid this place at all costs. Good jazz bands play in other venues. Spend your time and money at another location. You will thank me for this.

Do not waste your time at this bar. Aside from the music, my experience was a total let down. The drinks were way too pricey and way too weak. The high cover price was understandable, seeing that (hopefully) a portion of it goes to the band. The service was completely slow and the bar had the aroma of an over-used restroom. So many other choices in town...DO NOT go to The Backdoor unless you want a night NOT to remember.

Back Room Dark Practices. No mention of the $30 per person cover, watered down shot glass sized drinks and a band asking for tips in their brandy snifter (I mean fishbowl). Every person we heard walked out complaining as did we. Lousy service, average band, unreasonable cover and deceptive practices. Back Room - dark practices. Never again.

Went there on a hot Oct. night and paid a $25 cover - music was great, drinks were good. After the place filled up,it got to be too hot. Needed to crank up the air. Other than that, had a good experience. Will go back in the winter.

pretty nice joint. i sat in with phil seed once, and had a good time, however, one particular bartender wasn't friendly, and had no business working in this type of environment. it really killed my experience at the joint, and i probably won't return because of the bs. i'm a pro player, and have performed with the best all over the world, and there's no need for that. i hope he's fired by now- bad business for the club. i won't be back.

Visited 51/06/07 got in early with a complimentary $20 cover charge from our hotel. Liked the cool atmosphere which reminded me of Ronnie Scott's in london (but smaller) Staff very friendly and looked after us well. Music excellent good combo with first rate soloists, especially the lady singer. watched 2 sets and guest singer dropped in for a couple of number is the 2nd set. Styel eclectic with some blues and soul thrown in.
Tab came to £83 including tip which covered 8 drinks - low compared to UK. House rules are 1 cover plus 2 drinks per person per set. Recommended.
