I am from Louisiana and have been trying to find a good cajun restaurant in Chicago for a year and a half. A friend of mine from Louisiana recommended this place. The crawfish etouffee was good. It was the best I have had in Chicago. Not better than Mike Anderson’s or Picadilly’s in Louisiana, but still pretty good. I had their gumbo, too, and it was just okay. They served it with jamalaya rice, which looked funny, but was okay. They didn’t server enough sausage or shrimp with it, and I don’t like that they serve it with cornbread instead of crackers. It was spicy but no real flavor. I don’t think the sausage was andoille, either. I would go back for the crawfish etouffee again.

I recently visited the Jazz Alley in Seattle with an old friend, witnessing McCoy Tyner and company, joined by the incomprable Bobby Hutcherson, in performances that seemed just short of belief. Memories of performances at the Jazz Sowcase in Chicago came up. It has been years since I have been to Chicago, but I still remember being entranced by the performers at the Jazz Showcase. I watched and listened to Milt Jackson there, and I remeber that I was appauding, on my feet, over the top as a spectator, and later a bit embarrassed by my enthusiasum, but still so taken away, so gratfull for the moments of grace.
There were others at your Showcase. Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter, Illonois Jacquet, Eddie Jefferson . . .
I can't suggest that I have had the honor of knowing you, Joe Segal, but I can recall seeing you behind the bar, you served me scotch, and provided me with the pleasure of visiting your Showcase. It appears from this on-line forum that you remain a force in the presentation exquisite music.
I thank you Joe, I remain a fan, across the years, whatever the forum.
