I loved this place for a long time -- key word loved -- especially for late night food runs. However, the day staff is awful. I was literally yelled at for going up to the counter to place my order because no one was coming to my table after a 10 minute wait in a place where there was only one other group. I felt so bad about it that my friend and I left, only to be FOLLOWED OUT and of the place and yelled at some more by the same waiter. I'm sorry you're understaffed, but jeeze, I just wanted one of your famous milkshakes :(

... not going back after that -- I mean overall it's good but I was really shocked by that kind of behavior considering the waiters are usually pretty chill. They charge enough for the food to staff a couple extra people during the day.

In my opinion, Kafein is a great place to socialize and talk. Awesome drinks. I like goin there to study or write. Great place for a date too.

Kafein rules. If you want a place to go that is "not-pretentious" as you say, then go to a bar called "Ditka's" in Bolingbrook; I am sure that they would love to have you. I wrote a whole paper on Noam Chomsky in Kafein back in 1993. Evanston is paradise to a guy with brains stuck in the Western Suburbs. Don't ever change, baby.

Kafein is a great place to meet people. The wait staff is fun and is always very helpful. If you go into to Kafein with an open mind and talk to the people around you, you will always have a great time. No one is really pretensious.

What can I say about Kafein that hasn't already been said about Afghanistan? The couch up near the window(now replaced)had springs poking at your neck and ass, allowing for a level of comfort only reachable at your father's 3rd wedding. The waitresses, however, are wonderful. Brett and Rachel...you make it all worthwhile. Don't ever change. Good coffee, somewhat overpriced, but I keep going back for more. Hurrah

If you like this place, please continue to go. If you found it trying to hard to be special, try Cafe Express(bad name) off of Dempster 1/2 block west of Chicago Ave. Opens early but still is open till 12 or 1?(I forgot the hours) Good coffee/company.
