I've been looking for the best Indian restaurant for a while and thought that the India House was it. But after a few bad experiences there (more with the staff than with the food) I decided to try somewhere new. Klay Oven's food was nothing short of spectacular. Although they were out of eggplant and I couldn't order my favorite dish (Bainghan Bhartha) the other entrees were absolutely fantastic. Perfectly spiced, served personally tableside by the host, and absolutely delicious, the food far surpassed any cuisine from the other Indian restaurants downtown. After reading the other reviews I must agree that the service was a bit slow (which is even more disturbing seeing as how we went on a Sunday night when the restaurant was practically empty). However, the food more than made up for the borderline slow service. I would highly recommend this restaurant but would go at times when it wasn't too busy, just to be safe.

Bad food... slow service...arrogant yet incompetent staff. Complained to management and they offered me $10.00 on my next meal(yeh right!) Told him I would never eat their again and will advise others not to. His response was "Fine- I don't care." I have not been treated so poorly since my last call to HP tech support!

Yesterday was the first time (Feb. 14th, 2006) I went to Klay Oven. I have to say; it's one of the finer Indian restaurants I've been to in a long time. The food is just awesome and so is the service. I would recommend this place again and certainly would go again myself.

Pathetic service. If you can wait for 1-1/2 hours for your food to come, arrogant behaviour, tasteless food, then visit this place.
My recommendation - you are better if you don't go

Great food, not-so-great service.

Please dont visit this place,if you expect decent service. All the managers are extremely arrogant and snobbish and refuse to even acknowledge your presence.

Oh, I forgot...this restaraunt HIGHLY recommended in my book! Well refined versions of the foods of North India. Try the Keema Naan and Malai Kofta!

Most of the popular Indian food is from the NORTH of India. I am also from this region but raised in Chicago since the late 60's. The Klay Oven is most probably the BEST Indian restaraunt in terms of food taste for two reasons. Some of the dishes have a refined style and secondly, no other Indian restaraunt in Chicago is good. Good balance, not over spiced, good environment and the service is decent....but feel free to raise a finger when you need service if you dont get all the TLC as you demand. But nothing compares to my cooking!
