It IS a violation of health code to bring outside food into another food establishment. Don't do it.

I love Kopi Cafe for their sincere vibe. It's a coffee house with a great menu. Who brings food from another coffee house; especially one across the street? That's not uncouth that's borderline retarded. Kopi Cafe is a relaxed place to read a newspaper and enjoy a cup of coffee...unless you're the type of person that likes to go out to eat with a prepacked meal in your hand (then I guess Kopi's uptight).

What is this place?
So I went in this morning and sat down with a newspaper and a breakfast sandwich which I had bought at Starbucks - which I admit, probably uncouth... but Starbucks was packed. All I wanted was to just chill out with a coffee and read my paper, with a little something to munch on. I ordered a latte from the waitress, and then the cook comes by and tells me I'm in violation of some health code violation for bringing in outside food. The vibe here is seriously uptight.

We've been making regular trips to Kopi for after-dinner coffee almost as long as we've been going to Reza's (just a few doors down).
Ambiance is key here. I'll allow that service can sometimes be a step behind, but the quality of the menu makes up for it.

Reviewer "Andersonville resident" makes me ill... and I quote "The waitstaff could take a few lessons from higher-end restaurants." HA! This reviewer is obviously missing the point of the place. Kopi shouldn't change one bit, it is a great place with good coffee and good eats. Best cafe in chicago no doubt.

after living in the neighborhood for about 6 months, i finally went into kopi when a friend was in town visiting. i can't believe my stupidity for not going in sooner! i love this place! i would go there every day if i could. the gift shop is great. the coffee is great. the food is wonderful - i love all the veggie options and it all tastes so good. the staff are all really nice and quick. the atmosphere and music are fantastic too. a definite must-see!

Perfectly decent in some respects, but the service can be downright lousy. The waitstaff could take a few lessons from higher-end restaurants. Drinks are slow to arrive, refills on coffee are often neglected, and tables wobble like crazy. As for the all-veggie menu: it's tiresome.

I love coffeeshops, especially the independent ones that have to be pointed out to you by very good friends... because after living in Chicago for just 8 months and in Roscoe Village, Kopi Cafe was only recently revealed to me... and the moment I set foot in there and drank a cup of their house tea, had a bite of their delicious carrot cake, I knew I would be back there again very soon.

Kopi is my favorite neighborhood place! The owners are very decent folks and the staff are very very fun nice interesting people. The food is tasty and the drinks are supreme. I like this place because it doesn't hav all the shi-shi glitz of many places in Chicago. It's simple. It's good! They have local art and the coffee IS fair trade!
One criticism- even the former hippy in me can't get over the front area with pillows. It's kinda grungy. Crunch Crunch. Oh, and something there is that does not love the bagels.
