When he’s not making music, Paul Velat owns and operates his own private music lesson studio, is a music instructor/therapist at SEASPAR (a special recreation organization for people with disabilities) and is the Choir director at Chicago’s Berkeley/Hillside Presbyterian Church. Paul also runs a concert series at Roosevelt University called ‘improvEXPLOSION!’, which he started in 2001 with approximately one concert per month. The main focus has been to promote and facilitate the improvised music movement here in Chicago. As a performer, Lord of the Yum-Yum has toured widely around the country, with a focus on the Midwest, and, since 1991, has appeared on many radio and television shows as a well as hundreds of performances around the greater Chicago area. Overall, Lord Of the Yum-Yum proves to be a highly entertaining artist and a true stand out.

At first listen, Lord of the Yum-Yum (a.k.a Paul Velat) seems like a very crazed individual with an excess of time on his hands. Err, make that lips. In reality, Lord of the Yum-Yum is a breath of cutting edge fresh air, and he goes about this by doing something seemingly very simple: taking the human voice and layering it with the help of electronic technology to create something truly wonderful and breath-taking. Lord of the Yum-Yum combines a guttural scat vocal style, classical themes and throat singing to lead the modern voice to mind-numbingly new heights. Versions of classic pieces such as Bizet’s Carmen take a whole new lease on life while still maintaining the same classic beauty and familiarity of the original. In a music world of predictable lyrics and over-done beats, the simplicity in the genuineness of the art form is highly evident. Although it could just be a guy who makes funny noises which just happen to sound like classical music pieces, and just stumbled on a talent which is truly unique, I do believe that that is highly unlikely.
