Benefit is actually 31 bands in 92 minutes
"The annual "30 Bands in 60 Minutes" is not just a fundraiser for veteran experimental theater company the Neo-Futurists. It's also a breakneck, frequently hilarious but efficient way to get a multiflavored taste of Chicago music — a month's worth of exploratory clubbing in a single night.
A pair of band setups on either side of the stage enabled one act to assemble while another was performing, allowing a nearly seamless transition from band to band — and making their stylistic contrasts that much more striking. The splashy solo debut of gifted vocalist Suzy Brack (late of fey electronic poppers the Mystechs) — a "Hawaii Five-O" parody/homage to the Neo-Futurists by Brack and her band the New Jack Lords, featuring Spies Who Surf guitar-slinger Marshall Dawson — was immediately followed by a touching jazz ballad that hushed the crowd completely: 9-months-pregnant Elizabeth Conant and her jazz-guitarist husband Fareed Haque's rendition of the Lucy and Desi classic "We're Having a Baby..."
