In defense of the pianist who plays in the Lobby of the Renaissance Hotel Chicago regarding "drowning in the background" due to noisy clientele... We are hired to perform "background" so that people enjoying conversation don't have to shout at each other. In that setting, it is not "concert performing" ~ it is background din. We don't attempt to be "heard".. in that we are providing ambience for customers. If we get too loud, people complain that they can't talk, comfortably. Different settings require different music. ;-)
