Never judge a book by its cover. This is a restaurant that rewards adherence to this rule, for beneath its dumpy exterior (and let's face it, interior too), Mama Desta's hides the best damn Ethiopian food in the city. Their lentils are to die for, their chickpeas are creamy and tasty, their sponge bread is flavorful, and their gomen is delicious.
Or at least, they *had* the best best Ethiopian food in the city. They haven't been open the past few times I've gone. If they've closed down from lack of business, I will be very sad. It may not be as pretty as Demera, but the food is the thing, and I'd choose Mama Desta's any day of the week, and twice on Saturdays.

Excellent food and very friendly, attentive service. Good beer selection too. Great date spot!

i took my fiance who loves ethiopian food here for his birthday and sadly we were not impressed. the quality of the food has changed since i had last been there a few years ago. we didn't like the tej (honey wine) as it was more like a spiced nectar with little kick. my vegetarian combo plate was pretty meager and i was disappointed by the greens that were not much more than sauteed frozen spinach. not much spice in the lentils either. overall average at best, which is not great but not bad. i'm sorry to say we don't plan on going back. however if you're craving ethiopian food and you're in the area it will do the trick.

Ethiopian food is one of my favorites and this place was wonderful! Some injera I have had had a really strong taste that overpowered the food. This did not.
We made the trip from the Loop up to Mama Desta's while in Chicago for a conference and it was totally worth it.

All I gotta say is.. DAMN! How y'all ain't gonna have no damn silverware! I had to eat that shit with some bread! Oh girl, it was good! I told Boo.. bring me some of that grub down to county when you come for the congical visit.. and boo did. I told him to pump his brakes thinkin he was the mac or something.. humpin and grubbin at the same time but it was off the hook for sheezy! When I bust outta here Im bouncin' right over to Mama Desta's.. makes a homegirl feel like she's back in Africa!

This restaurant is run by the same people who ran Mama Desta's in Washington until they lost their lease. This restaurant set the standard for Ethiopian food and twenty years later people here are still talking about it. I hope you all run it out of Chicago and back to Washington!
